Opioid Settlement Information

Every community in Iowa has been affected by the opioid crisis. The Iowa Attorney General’s office is working to address this crisis by holding accountable the companies, including pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, pharmacies, and others, that bear responsibility for it.

In 2022, the Attorney General’s office signed on to five new settlement agreements with manufacturers Teva and Allergan, as well as pharmacies CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens.  Like the earlier settlements with Johnson & Johnson/Janssen and the three major pharmaceutical distributors (AmeriSource Bergen, Cardinal, and McKesson) each new settlement includes funds that will be used to abate the opioid crisis throughout the State of Iowa through prevention and treatment.  Iowa is eligible to receive up to $345 million dollars over a multi-year period under these five new agreements. The settlement funds will be allocated among the State and participating Iowa subdivisions in accordance with the Iowa Opioid Memorandum of Understanding and must be used for opioid abatement activities.

Eligible Iowa subdivisions will receive notice of the new settlement agreements and an opportunity to participate via email in late January 2023.

The national agreements and additional background information on the settlements can be found on the National Opioid Settlement website.

If subdivisions have questions about the settlement process, please email OpioidSettlement@ag.iowa.gov or call William Pearson at (515) 242-6773
