I strongly support President Obama’s nomination of Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court of the United States. I was hoping that he would nominate either Judge Jane Kelly of Iowa or Judge Garland.
Judge Garland grew up in the Midwest and worked hard and honorably as a kid, student, prosecutor and judge. As Attorney General, I appreciate his work as a prosecutor, especially his tireless, professional and successful prosecution of Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing.
His intellectual abilities are at the highest level, his judgment is equal to his intellectual abilities, and he has 19 years of impressive judicial experience on the D.C. Court of Appeals, the last three as chief judge.
Judge Garland is more towards the center than any nominee of either party in the last 28 years, reaching back to the nomination of Justice Anthony Kennedy. I think this is a good thing, particularly in today’s context.
I hope the Senate confirms Judge Garland. I think he would be an outstanding Supreme Court Justice.
