Attorneys General Ask Feds to Act on Youth-Oriented Advertising for Alcoholic Energy Drinks

Thirty state attorneys general, including Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, are urging the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to stop alcohol manufacturers from making misleading health-related statements when they advertise alcoholic beverages that contain caffeine and other stimulants.

Comment from Attorney General Tom Miller:

“We believe alcoholic energy drinks are a serious health and safety risk for young people, but ads don’t reflect that. We are concerned that ads targeted at young people claim alcoholic energy drinks can increase a person’s stamina or energy level, but they fail to tell the potentially severe adverse consequences of mixing alcohol with caffeine or other stimulants.

“Stimulants in alcoholic energy drinks may cause an intoxicated person to falsely believe that he or she can continue to drink and function normally, when that is not the case. These beverages are especially popular with teens and young adults, and the alcoholic beverage makers have engaged in aggressive marketing campaigns for the drinks aimed at youth.”
