Attorney General Files Consumer Fraud Lawsuit against La' James International College

Lawsuit alleges Ft. Dodge-based cosmetology school engaged in deceptive, omissive and unfair practices

(DES MOINES, Iowa)  The Consumer Protection Division today filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against Fort Dodge-based La’ James International College, alleging the cosmetology school engaged in deceptive, omissive and unfair practices.

“What many students experience is a school with extraordinary turnover of instructors resulting in ‘instructorless’ classrooms and inconsistent instruction, lack of access to practice their skills and, ultimately, an institution that treats them more like free labor than students,” the lawsuit, filed in Polk County District Court, alleged.

La’ James operates cosmetology and massage schools and salons in Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Johnston, Fort Dodge, and Iowa City, and has one location each in Illinois and Nebraska.  The company is privately owned by Cynthia Becher.

The lawsuit seeks a court order barring the defendants from misleading and concealing material information from students, unspecified reimbursement to students and unspecified penalties and costs.
