Job Details
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks a recent law-school graduate for the Samuel Freeman Miller Honors Fellowship.
Named for the first Iowan to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, the Fellowship is intended to give young, motivated lawyers hands-on experience in the Office’s Solicitor General Division, which primarily handles the State’s most complex appellate litigation. That includes defending State laws and rules, suing the federal government to keep it within its constitutional and statutory limits, and protecting the public by representing the State and its officers in major civil litigation.
Lawyers in this elite unit must be creative and motivated. Like Assistant Solicitors General, Miller Fellows are expected to run their own cases, but they have access to the rest of the Office of the Attorney General for support. Miller Fellows regularly practice before the Iowa Court of Appeals, the Iowa Supreme Court, federal district courts, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals; they also have the opportunity to assist with the Division’s work before the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition to a collegial environment among the best collection of appellate lawyers in the state, perks of working for the Office of the Attorney General include flexible work-from-home schedules; excellent work-life balance and benefits; and no hourly billing.
Requirements
This position requires a license to practice law in Iowa; a dedication to public service; and demonstrated research, writing, and oral-advocacy skills.
The most competitive applicants will have practiced law for fewer than five years, clerked for an appellate judge or court, and served on a law review. The salary for a Miller Fellow is $96,000.
