Job Details

The Iowa Attorney General seeks an attorney to represent the Department of Transportation Division. Attorneys in this division are charged with providing all legal services for the Iowa DOT and acting as the legal advisors to the transportation commission and the director. This includes many areas of law including providing daily guidance to a state agency, contracts, human resources, open records requests, administrative rules, real estate, and licensing. These attorneys practice before administrative law judges, Iowa district courts, the Iowa Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, as well as on occasion in the federal district courts.

This position is litigation-focused and the ideal candidate will have experience and/or interest in civil litigation, including personal injury and property damage torts, contracts, and condemnations. The position includes both courtroom and appellate work. There may be some travel, but over-night travel should be rare.

Some perks of working in this division include an office at the Iowa DOT in Ames; flexible schedule with some ability to work from home; the opportunity to work on a wide variety of interesting, novel, or exciting issues; excellent work-life balance and benefits; and no hourly billing.

Successful applicants will have a dedication to public service and demonstrated superlative research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Previous judicial clerkship and/or appellate practice experience a plus.
