Job Details

As an Assistant Attorney General in the Consumer Protection Division, you will work to ensure that Iowans can depend on the honesty and scruples of those they deal with daily. The Division’s primary duty is to enforce the Consumer Fraud Act, which protects Iowans from fraud, false advertising, and unfair or deceptive acts or practices.
Roughly half of your time will be devoted to automobile- and vehicle-related consumer-protection issues, which affect the lives of thousands of Iowans each year. Your work will include disputes related to lemon-law violations, warranties, sales, and repairs. The other half of your time will be spent on a variety of other matters within the Division’s purview, such as unfair debt collection practices; credit-card, healthcare, home-improvement, and securities-related fraud; data breaches and data privacy; elder financial abuse and fraud; and antitrust.

Requirements

You must be dedicated to helping Iowa consumers by stopping bad actors and maximizing consumer restitution. While negotiation and settlement are often the best means for doing so, you must know that the best settlements occur only when bad actors know they face a skilled trial lawyer—one who knows how to draft and file a petition; issue subpoenas and civil investigative demands; obtain discovery; examine witnesses in court and at depositions; prepare and argue motions; and, ultimately, present a winning case to a judge. Candidates with previous experience in civil or criminal litigation may have an easier time demonstrating these skills. But the Division also encourages newer lawyers with those skills—or the ability and drive to develop them—to apply.
This position requires a license to practice law in, or pending bar-exam results from, Iowa. Pay and benefits In addition to a collegial environment among those who share your passion for public service, perks of working for the Office of the Attorney General include flexible work-from-home schedules; excellent work-life balance and benefits; and no hourly billing.
